Exercise for Weight Loss

When people start an exercise program, some lose a lot of weight, while others lose nothing. An effective exercise program for weight loss should 1) be continuous, 2) use all of your major muscle groups, 3) include one intense workout a week for each muscle group, and 4) be done on land, rather than in the water.

Stop-and-start exercises, such as lifting weights, do not require that you use your muscles continuously enough to burn a lot of calories. Activities that use just one muscle group, such as doing situps or pushups, won’t help you to lose a lot of weight because the stressed muscle groups tire quickly so you can’t exercise very long.

Exercising at a leisurely pace won’t help you lose a lot of weight either. You burn calories while you exercise and after you finish exercising. Intense exercise raises body temperature which continues to be elevated and burn more calories for several hours after you finish exercising. This also explains why swimming is not the best exercise for weight loss, because water conducts heat away from your body so fast that your temperature does not rise. When you exercise on land, air insulates your body so your temperature rises.

Pick sports in which you can exercise intensely, but don’t exercise very hard in one sport more often than once a week. Every time that you exercise, your muscle fibers are torn slightly. You can tell this has happened to you when you muscles feel sore on the day after you have exercised. If you exercise intensely on days when your muscles feel sore, you are at increased risk for injuring them. If you want to exercise vigorously every day, you should choose two sports that use different sets of muscles, such as cycling and rowing.

The Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy With Or Without Duodenal Switch

Although the vertical gastrectomy, also referred to as the vertical sleeve gastrectomy or simply sleeve gastrectomy, is less commonly performed than many other types of weight loss surgery, there are nonetheless circumstances in which it is the preferred option for a patient.

Despite the fact that there have been many advances in weight loss surgery in recent years, particularly with the introduction of laparoscopic techniques and such operations as adjustable gastric banding, for many patients these are simply not an option.

For example, although the traditional Roux-En-Y operation, which combines both restriction of the stomach and bypass of the intestine, is still considered by many people to be the ideal form of gastric bypass surgery, giving good weight loss, reasonably low weight regain and relatively few complications, it is not always considered suitable for people who are excessively obese. In addition, it is very difficult to carry out the bypass in this type of surgery laparoscopically in excessively obese patients and many doctors consider that this carries too high a risk.

One alternative for patients with a very high BMI (typically in excess of 60) is the vertical sleeve gastrectomy with duodenal switch. Here however the operation is often performed as two separate procedures.

In the first instant a vertical gastrectomy is performed and this can normally be carried out laparoscopically even in very high BMI patients. This will often result in a weight loss of as much as 100 to 200 pounds (bear in mind that a very high BMI patient typically start with a weight in excess of 500 pounds) and, while this will still leave patients classed as being morbidly obese, this initial weight loss then makes it possible to carry out further surgery.

Thus, the second stage of the operation is the addition of the duodenal switch bypass which, at the patient’s reduced weight, can often once more be performed laparoscopically.

Although there are differences between the vertical sleeve gastrectomy with duodenal switch and the Roux-En-Y gastric bypass operation there are also considerable similarities. The fact that the sleeve gastrectomy can be performed as a two-stage operation effectively means that excessively obese patients can now have the benefits of the traditional Roux-En-Y but can also enjoy the added benefits of modern laparoscopic operating techniques.

Weight Loss Through Walking

No one really likes the thought of exercising to lose weight. Just the thought of seeing someone pumping iron, doing aerobics, while sweating profusely is enough to make anyone turn away. It doesn’t have to be that way though. One of the greatest and simplest forms of weight loss is walking. Think about this for a minute.

- Walking is something we do every day of our lives. We don’t need to learn how to do it.

- Walking is inexpensive. No having to buy special food, pills, or liquids. You don’t have to purchase exercise equipment, or join an expensive health club.

- Walking does so much more than just help you lose weight. It helps with your overall fitness.

- Walking is peaceful and can be a lot of fun.

When you decide to begin walking to lose those added pounds, there are only a few things to keep in mind.

Buy a good pair of walking shoes. Your feet will love you for this! Don’t just throw on an old pair of 10 year old sneakers and begin walking 2 miles. You will regret it by the time your finished. Spend $40 or so and get yourself a nice pair of shoes to walk in. It’s money well spent.

Be sure to wear a good thick pair of socks. It will help keep your feet even more comfortable. Also wear loose fitting clothing. If you try walking 2 miles in a tight fitting pair of pants, you may look good doing it, but you won’t be feeling very good at the end of your walk.

Take a personal radio or CD player with you. Have a good set of headphones that stay on your head. Enjoy yourself while walking and losing weight.

One of the most important keys to walking and losing weight is to take it slowly. Don’t try to overdo it and walk 5 miles your first few days, or weeks. Start out with a mile, or even less if necessary. Gradually work your way up to longer distances.

Pace yourself while walking. If you feel you’re starting to get out of breath, stop for a while. You don’t have to walk fast or jog to lose weight. Simply by walking a nice pace will give you surprising results.

Walk for at least 20-30 minutes at a time. If you only walk for 10 minutes, you’re not going to see much in the way of weight loss. You need to walk for 30 minutes to get your heart rate up and body working. Also, try to walk at least 4 times a week. Every other day is good. Walking can be done in your neighborhood or in a nice local park. You can enjoy your surroundings and listen to your favorite music. 30 minutes will fly by before you know it.

Keep track of your weight loss with a good set of scales at home. By walking 2 miles, 3-4 times a week, you should begin seeing results within a week or two. By the end of a month you will be shocked at the pounds your body is losing. Walking is by far the easiest and most beneficial way to weight loss there is. It’s natures way of keeping us all healthier.
