Quick Weight Loss - 3 Red Flags

Nowadays, everyone wants everything now. The instantaneous gratification lifestyle is upon us. Fast food and other quick fixes have been the bane of our civilization for the last 20 years.

So what’’s wrong with a little quick weight loss?

Three Red Flags For Quick Weight Loss

Let your skin catch up with you. Depending on your age, your skin may or may not be able to realistically catch up with your progress as you go. Is it possible to lose weight quickly? Absolutely. Does it look good to have loose, hanging skin. Not exactly.

Don”t ruin your metabolism. A lot of quick weight loss is either based on metabolism enhancing pills or severe crash diets. Don”t let some fly by night company convince you that the next great pill will let you lose weight and not do a thing. Remember, you hear about these companies getting sued every day. That should raise a red flag for your. Furthermore, don”t drop your calorie intake to nonexistent levels. Your metabolism is what helps keep the fat off once you get to your target weight. Don”t hinder it.

Know the difference between losing weight and losing body fat. Anyone can lose weight. It’’s usually not a tough process. However, by you letting the scale be the judge of your progress, you get into a dangerous world of “weight” measurement versus “fat” measurement. Losing water weight is easy. Just go on a low carb diet. However, this water weight loss doesn”t really effect your fat stores does it? Make sure you know the difference.

Conclusion

Even though quick weight loss is possible, it’’s not exactly the right thing to do.

Shaq’s Attack On Obesity

Childhood obesity is getting a Shaq attack. In his new reality TV show, Shaq?s Big Challenge, NBA legend Shaquille O?Neal sets out to transform six overweight middle school students?ranging in age from 11 to 14 and in weight from 182 to 285 pounds?into fit, active kids. He has his work cut out for him: At the start of the show, half of the kids cannot do even a single sit-up, and one boy talks about topping his cheeseburgers with French fries (yes, inside the bun).

Certainly, kids? increasingly sedentary lifestyle is a big factor in the obesity epidemic. ?We live in a society now where it?s easy to eat a bag of chips and watch TV, easy to eat a bag of chips and play with your PlayStation,? says O?Neal. ?It?s easy to eat a bag of donuts and just sit down and not do anything.?

But part of the problem is that children are eating too many cheeseburgers?with or without the fries?and not enough veggie burgers.

Kids get fat for the same reasons that adults get fat: They eat the wrong foods. On any given day, most Americans don?t eat even two servings of fruit, but we have plenty of room on our plates for meat. Each year, Americans scarf down 600 million Big Macs and 20 billion hot dogs. We eat 127 chickens every single second.

This mountain of meat is making us fat.

Population studies show that meat-eaters have three times the obesity rate of vegetarians and nine times the obesity rate of vegans. It?s possible to be an overweight vegan, of course, but adult vegans are, on average, 10 to 20 pounds lighter than adult meat-eaters.

Here?s another reason for kids to eat their veggies: Children who are raised as vegetarians have a lower risk of the health problems that will plague their meat-eating peers as they grow older. In the last edition of his acclaimed parenting guide, Dr. Spock?s Baby and Child Care, the late Dr. Benjamin Spock wrote, ?Children who grow up getting their nutrition from plant foods rather than meats have a tremendous health advantage. They are less likely to develop weight problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer.?

If we don?t change our eating habits, we and our kids can expect to keep getting fatter?and sicker. According to a report published last year by the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity, if present trends continue, nearly half of the children in North America will be overweight by 2010. Overweight kids tend to become overweight adults, at risk for heart disease, stroke and all the other ailments stemming from extra pounds. Already, pediatricians are reporting an alarming increase in the number of children with type 2 diabetes, a disease that typically affects adults. Eighty-five percent of these cases involve overweight kids.

?This is going to be the first generation that?s going to have a lower life expectancy than their parents,? says Dr. Phillip Thomas, a British surgeon who works with obese patients. ?It?s like the plague is in town and no one is interested.?

Fortunately, that?s not completely true. Shaquille O?Neal is interested and he?s on a quest to ?help kids across America live more healthfully? (according to his show?s Web site). But parents can do their part too. Fast-food dinners of chicken nuggets and patty melts might be convenient, but they?re not doing our kids any good. Childhood is the time when eating habits are formed. We need to start teaching kids to make smart eating choices that will serve them throughout their lives.

Water, Your Metabolism, and Weight Loss

Anybody who reads my articles on health and weight loss knows that my number one recommendation is to get more exercise and try to eat healthy.

Most people have long known that eating healthy includes drinking enough water. Most people also understand and would probably agree that they probably don”t drink enough water.

What most people don”t know is that drinking enough water, staying hydrated, can be an important part of a weight loss program in several ways.

First of all, water helps with almost all the activities of the body at a cellular level including the distribution of nutrients and elimination of waste. Even if we simply accept that if we are healthier we are more likely to do things relative to weight loss, increasing our water consumption is already one step in our favor.

Another factor is that when thirsty, our bodies can send signals that are misinterpreted as hunger. Many a midnight refrigerator raider is actually in need of a glass of water when they eat what’’s left of the apple pie. Not only are they consuming extra calories and depriving their bodies of the water necessary for health, but they are perpetuating a condition of chronic dehydration.

In fact, it has been estimated that up to 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated and dehydration can SLOW DOWN METABOLISM!

If you add these small items to the facts that remaining properly hydrated can improve mental acuity, lubricate joints, thus easing back and joint pain, and is believed to decrease the risk of certain cancers, you can see why drinking enough water is important.

However, how much IS enough?

Obviously, the actual amount may vary from individual to individual, and you may already be getting a fair share of the total amount you need. Also, such things as activity, climate, and altitude may effect your individual need, Here are a few guidelines:

1. Divide your body weight by two and drink that many ounces per day.

2. When you exercise, or if you live in an arid area, try to get an extra amount each day. Add a pint for dry climates, and eight ounces for each 20 minutes of exercise.

3. Coffee, tea, and sodas actually are diuretics and will contribute to dehydration. If you must drink them, drink an equal amount of water.

4. Do not try to substitute juices for water. While there is nothing basically wrong with juice, and it is in fact normally a healthy drink, it also contains calories. Water doesn”t.

5. Unless you are engaged in really intense exercise, stick with water. Sports drinks also contain calories and unless you are a professional athlete or are training for a marathon you will probably not need to replace the electrolytes by means of a calorie and carbohydrate loaded drink. Water will do just fine.

As good and important as water is, as necessary to health as it is, as much as it can help with your weight loss program, it is still only a helper in that aspect. The key ingredients needed to lose weight and increase your metabolic rate will still be exercise and eating healthy.

Weight Loss Supplements-Warning

Overweight is a problem of millions. But for the moment we just got several medicines for the treatment of obesity that were officially approved. Nature abhors the vacuum, so weight loss market is currently imbued with different weight loss supplements.

The great amount of these ?magic? pills, claiming perfect tweaking our body to lose huge amounts of weight, are no more than simple laxatives. We are likely to disrupt our gut organisms with the help of such ?magic?. And losing weight with laxatives actually seems pretty difficult.

Another kind of weight loss supplements we better stay away from are pills containing mood-altering and super potent components. Most dangerous to our health are so called ?Thai pills? that are now banned in many countries. They can really suppress our appetite. But its action goes beyond simple appetite suppression. Since it contain at least a couple of narcotic drugs, these pills make our memory worse, disrupt calcium metabolism and affect our cardiovascular system.

Medication, as we know, should treat a man. Some manufacturers of weight loss supplements love to claim that their remedy for weight loss is nevertheless a real drug, but it?s called ?supplement? for the only reason ? it?s all natural.

Can this statement be an argument? We know, Socrates was poisoned with hemlock ? the very natural herb yet fatal for a man. Any biological dictionary now filled with description of dozens of herbs that are fatal for man. So ?natural? does not mean ?healthy? and effective.

Ephedra ? Chinese herb in origin. In the check list of raw material used in narcotic manufacture ephedra often features side by side with opium poppy and cannabis. Its ?curative? effect is attributed to stimulating blowout of adrenaline into the bloodstream, leading to boosting metabolism and breakdown of fat. The price for such blowout is rising of blood pressure, or hypertension.

A good deal of dietary supplements promise tonic action. Among them there are ginseng, eleuterococus, chinese magnolia-vine, pantocrine. Using these components enhance energy expenditure, hence increasing our diet effect. But the most serious result is achieved by those components in the sphere of rising hypertension and heart acceleration.

There are weight loss supplements with coffein. Coffein is known to stimulate energy expenditure and thus enhance expense of fat mass. However, coffein increases load on our heart and may cause rising blood pressure as well. It is also known that coffein boost our appetite. So it seems we have a coterie here.

There are also vitamins that participate in fat oxidizing, like ascorbic acid and B vitamins. But actually polyvitaminic supplements used for this purpose may contain some vitamins that block breakdown of fat; these can be PP vitamin or nicotinic acid.

Here we reviewed basic components in natural weight loss supplements that can be harmful for our health or inefficient as weight loss remedy. Remember that dietary supplements are not strictly regulated by FDA, so its safety can be evaluated only after dietary supplements have already reached the market. Don?t forget to pay attention to ingredients mix on weight loss supplements labels in order to avoid possible negative consequences for your health.

Is Body Mass Index or BMI a Real Measure of Obesity or is It Flawed?

Body Mass Index (bmi)
A Misleading measure of Obesity

Many professionals use body mass index also known as bmi as a measure of excess fat or obesity, but the system is totally flawed and misleading. So…

Don?t use body mass index, otherwise known as bmi, as a measuring stick to see if you are overweight or obese, because it?s totally misleading.

Yes if you are obese, the body mass index measurement will tell you that you are obese, there?s no doubt about that, however…

You could be only a bit overweight and the bmi tells you that you are obese.

Also…

You could be totally normal and the body mass index could tell you that you are overweight. So…

Why is bmi used?

That?s a good question!

First, it?s convenient. Anyone can take your height and weight, look on a chart and ?label you? as obese or overweight.

Secondly, it allows weight loss clinics to sell a lot of memberships, and allows even non professionals to sell a lot of weight loss products.

So… bmi charts make it real easy to fool a lot of people, so it?s important you understand how it works.

What is Body Mass Index (bmi)?

Quite simply body mass index, is an index of your body mass relative to your height.

The bmi is calculated by taking your weight (in Kilograms) divided by your Height (in meters) squared. Simple isn?t it? :-)

But don?t worry, there are lots of charts and automatic calculators available online where you can use Pounds and inches and get to your bmi, and…

A body mass index of 18.5 or less is considered underweight, and normal is between 18.5 & 24.9. From 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight, and a bmi of 30 or greater is considered obese, so…

Lets say that you have two people who are 5? 6? tall and both weigh 192 Lbs.

On the body mass index, both of their bmi?s would be ?31? and both would be considered to be ?Obese?.

However…

The problem here is that ?Weight? is used to make the calculation, and that?s what throws these numbers out the window, and here?s why…

One person could actually be Obese, and the other could be a very fit body builder and weight lifter who was pure muscles with less than 2% body fat!

And yet, on the BMI scale they would both be considered ?Obese?

Ridiculous isn?t it?

Now these two examples are opposite extremes, but I hope you understand the point. A more normal example would be…

Lets say that you decide to join a Gym to lose weight. You work out for months, lose 45 Lbs of fat, and put on 45 Lbs of Muscles.

You have gotten much fitter, and improved your health a great deal, but when you calculate your body mass index… ?You?re still Obese?

That?s when most people just give up! However…

You may even have reduced your percentage of body fat quite a bit over time, but the bmi will ?Not Reveal that Success to You?

What?s wrong with that picture?

First of all, why use a measuring system which won?t even reveal to you, what little Success you are having? It?s hard enough to stay motivated on any weight loss system, without not even being aware of what little success you are having.

Please realize that…

I?m just using the ?Gym Example? to make a point, because most of the exercise routines that are done in Gyms are actually very bad and inefficient for burning fat. It?s a lot of hard work, and a lot of sweating for very little results, because…

Most of the exercise routines, which people do in Gyms and on exercise equipment, burn mostly sugar and very little fat. ?That?s Right?.

Oh yes you?ll build muscles, but it?s mostly sugar burning muscle mass and not fat burning muscle mass, and that?s especially bad for a woman, because…

You can actually build enough muscles that you start to look like ?a Guy?, but you?ll still be fat, on the other hand, if you do the right kind of exercises like we teach in the free Slim America weight loss Project, then…

You can turn your body into a very efficient ?fat burning machine?, lose all the excess fat, and still look slim and sexy.

The choice is yoursfat loss with this kind of simple system ?is permanent?!

So you can forget all about body mass index or bmi, because it?s very misleading and can be very depressing, even when you are having some success.

It?s much better to use a measuring tape, because that will tell you ?The Truth?

Have a Great Life!

This organic acid is also proven to help the brain as well because of its ability to improve recognition memory, mental fatigue reduction and improve brain function. However, there has been news circulating that creatine cause several side effects on one?s body. One of the side effects being linked to creatine is related to kidney problems. Some people pointed out that long-term use of creatine might cause kidney stones to some users. But, solid evidence against creatine with regard to this ailment has not been provided.

Another side effect being pointed to creatine is renal stress. This condition will be triggered when a person with existing renal or kidney problems drink creatine. A person might also feel bloated but it could be due to the feeling of gaining mass.

The only proven side effect of creatine to the human body is diarrhea. However, this happened because the athletes using creatine took more than the prescribed amount of creatine. Diarrhea was immediately resolved after reducing the dosage.

Generally speaking, there has been no full proof evidence against the long-term use of creatine. Most of the allegations for this product do not have a strong data that the observed side effects are due to creatine. There are people that suspects that side effects happen on case-to-case basis and might vary according to the form of creatine. Only the over dosage of creatine linked with diarrhea has been proven and it is just logical since it is not really advisable to drink more than the prescribed amount of medication.

Lose Weight with an Elliptical Trainer

Could you afford to burn some fat? What if in the process you were able to tone both your upper and lower body? Sound good? Then an elliptical trainer may be the ideal choice for a low-impact, total body workout.

A few years ago, elliptical trainers were novelties. Lately they are taking the exercise world by storm. In fact, they are gaining in sales on the tried and true treadmill. In addition to the benefits of a low-impact, upper and lower body workout, an elliptical trainer is an efficient method for losing weight.

More Muscles Exercised = More Calories Burned

You can burn more calories in less time with an elliptical trainer. The fact is, when you exercise more muscle groups simultaneously, you burn more calories in less time. Billions are spent each year in trying to lose weight in as little time as possible, most of that money is wasted. Well an elliptical trainer accomplishes that task better than any other fitness equipment.

With the upper and lower body exercise, you workout your back muscles, triceps, biceps, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes and chest. This is the only fitness equipment that offers such a full range of exercising.

By exercising more muscle mass you build muscle endurance, burn more calories and fat in less time, improve fat mobilization, and reduce your perceived rate of exertion. It is suggested you exercise harder on an elliptical trainer, and yet do not notice the extra exertion. By exercising more muscle groups at once, you get more results with less effort.

With a treadmill or exercise bike, you exercise only lower body muscles. There is no upper body resistance, and that is where the advantage of the elliptical trainer lies.

Of course, to gain full advantage of the upper exercise you must apply adequate resistance to the handlebars. Many people just go through the motions of moving their arms back and forth. They let their legs do most of the work. You want to distribute the resistance evenly between your lower and upper body. This allows you to lose the most weight while toning your upper body.

The energy expenditure on an elliptical trainer is particularly effective for overweight individual. It surpassed both treadmills and stationary bicycles in decreasing excess body fat.

Lose More Weight with Interval Training

The current craze in exercising is interval training, where you alternate between high intensity workouts and cool down periods. You burn an intense amount of calories for a limited period, recover, and do it again. Interval training is proven more effective in burning calories than a sustained level of exertion. You?ll find most elliptical trainers offer a version of interval training in their pre-select programs. Of course, you can simulate interval training with the manual controls.

If you are determined to lose some weight and get into shape, you owe it to yourself to check out an elliptical trainer. The low-impact, full body exercise will not only shed the pounds, but also tone the bod.

Fred Waters worked in the fitness equipment industry for a number of years, and is author of the Elliptical Trainer Review site. Check out the latest reviews on the most popular elliptical trainers, and get important buying tips from his Elliptical Trainer Buyer’’s Guide.
